Have you ever wondered if content length affect SEO ranking?
Well the short answer is absolutely YES. Question is what should be the sweet spot, what is the ideal content/blog post length that you should strive for. Do not however forget that this is about 1 of over 200 SEO ranking factors but I think it is an important one. Please read How To Do SEO for other ranking factors.
Let’s take a look at the research done by SerpIQ:
It seems then that the sweet spot is between 2,000 and 2,500 words. Such a content length allows you to achieve a few things:
- Increase dwell time. It takes a longer time to finish reading the material
- Provides substantial relevant content which is of value to your readers
- Keyword density increases and you can populate more related keywords and contents
It is not easy to have every single piece of content of this length. Knowing that you probably need to publish new contents on a regular basis, what do you do to both build and maintain your SEO rankings?
I offer the following suggestions:
The Must Have Keywords
These are the ones you absolutely want to try to rank for your website and your business. And these are areas of expertise you would have, so subject matter content materials wouldn’t be a problem. Make sure these pieces of contents reach the length of around 2,000 words to be most effective.
Substantial Supporting Contents
You still need to produce contents every now and then which support your core business and the core list of keywords. I don’t think these need to be too lengthy as they are elaborating on specific issues which are of more depth to the core contents. These articles should be between 1,000 to 1,500 words.
Maintaining SEO Ranking
Then there are the blog articles which you or your content team would try to produce every other day. From my own experience, these should not be fewer than 300 words. I believe these articles can be between 300 to 700 words.
It is important to get page 1 ranking but it is equally essential that you play it smart to achieve your SEO objectives. Which is why I suggested that low competition keywords be a critical part of your SEO strategy.
So do have different content lengths for the different content pieces.
