If you google around this topic of whether link building is important for SEO, I think most people will tell you it is. There is a minority of SEO experts who say otherwise though.
We all know that there are probably over 200 SEO ranking factors, some are more important than others, but is link building one of the more important factors?
My previous article on how to do SEO, we looked at the on-site and off-site SEO activities which need to be performed for SEO best practices. Social sharing of website content is easier than getting authority websites to provide quality links back to your website.
There is no easy way to get quality back-links other than having quality content so that there is imperative your readers share the contents around and that other authority websites reference your materials too in the form of a back-link.
Assuming link building is important, I would agree that quality will be more important than quantity. Quantity of links still can be manipulated through link buying.
There are also many myths around link building which you may be interested to know more about.
To me, keyword research remains a very key SEO strategy of mine, and the key is sourcing for low competition keywords in your niche. Get these to page 1 ranking and they will always provide the all crucial daily organic search traffic to your website. If you have the quality content, your readers will then do the rest, spreading and sharing your content around.
Therefore, you can do some conscious link building but I would suggest you also focus on building up great content. Explore long-tail keywords which have good search volume that may be your competitors have not targeted. Work hard to dominate those keywords, and continue optimizing your rankings.
