Do you have old blog content which needs to be updated, or is not ranking very well for SEO? Well, do not waste such content especially if they are good contents which you have put in great efforts creating. We can optimize such content and give it a new leash of life, which is what I will show you here.
The first thing you should note however is NEVER to delete any post or page. This may lead to 404 errors which will not augur well for your SEO ranking.
I refer you to my article SEO for Beginners, as we are effectively going to use the same steps to optimize your old content.
Especially if your old content did not quite follow the steps I provided in the aforementioned article, you have a good chance of optimizing them. I provide the following check-list for you to edit old content and optimize for SEO:
- Add/Change Meta Title
- Add/Change Meta Description
- Add/Change Alt tags in images
- Add/Change Internal Links
- Add/Change External Links
- Embed YouTube video
- Fetch as google
The last point may require a slight explanation. To do that, you need to go to your Google Webmaster (or search console as it is otherwise called):
Over there, go to tab Crawl and then Fetch as Google, you can then paste the url of the old content and click on the FETCH button. Doing that, you are essentially telling the crawl bot to crawl through your content again and update accordingly whatever changes you have since made.
So there you go, your old content get refreshed with good SEO practice or gets updated with stuff that has changed over time.
We know page 1 ranking is important to get us the organic traffic, so hopefully doing this on a regular basis gets your website closely updated and maintain your SEO rankings.
