It is actually quite easy to set up a simple website, especially if you do not have complicated requirements. And you do not need knowledge of html programming codes really.
Technically you need several things:
- Domain name
- Web hosting server
- Content Management System (CMS)
Domain Name
This essentially is the web address that you will own, like www.yourcompanyname.com which you can purchase from any domain provider like Godaddy or Namecheap.
As we talk about the web hosting server next, the web hosting provider usually also provides domain name registration and unless otherwise, I do recommend you get the domain name from the web hosting provider itself. This is especially so that you do not get into the subject of having to point the domain name IP addresses to the web hosting server (hmm, if this is getting too technical!).
There are various domain name extensions available like .com, .com.sg, .net etc. Where possible, I would suggest you go with a .com domain name as it is most familiar to people.
Web Hosting Server
A web hosting server is like the computing facilities that house the contents of your website. If your business is primarily targeting customers in Singapore, then I would recommend that you use a web hosting service provider with servers in Singapore. The location of your server affects Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and web loading speeds.
It is important to also choose a service provider who is reliable and provides excellent support when you need it. I have been using Vodien services and you may want to consider using them as well. Their most basic service starts at only S$10 a month and provides 5GB of disk space, 10 email boxes and can host up to 5 websites.
Content Management System (CMS)
The next thing you need is the Content Management System (CMS). It is like you need Microsoft Word to write your documents, you need something similar to build and design your website.
By fast, most websites in the world is built on the WordPress CMS. Besides being a very to use CMS, I would strongly recommend you to consider building your website on WordPress because of two main reasons. First, because it is widely used, support is easily found from the user community.
The second reason is that SEO can be performed well on WordPress CMS.
After you get your account from your web hosting service provider, they will typically provide you an access to the back-end where you can install the WordPress CMS for free.
If you are the techie folks, there are good YouTube tutorials to guide you through the steps above and there are also good resources on how to use WordPress.
However, if you find all this quite daunting, leave it to Anspire Consulting, a full-fledged digital marketing service provider to take care of it for you.
We do provide some courses to get you up to speed with WordPress as we believe on-going basis, it is good for you to be able to update your web contents on your own.
